Pella is a Malazan soldier of the garrison at Skullcup, an otataral mining camp. He is young enough that the people around him call him the boy, and the calluses ridging the index finger and thumb of his sword hand are about the only thing arguing otherwise.
He stands watch at Nearlight's Gate, where the prisoners of the pit come and go under guard. He has also read more than a soldier at a mining camp usually has. He quotes Emperor Kellanved out of Duiker's Imperial Campaigns to a prisoner who cannot see why a guard bothers, then tells her to find someone who can supply the rest of the passage.
