Pale

Pale is one of the Free Cities of the Genabackan continent. It stands roughly a thousand leagues from Genabaris by one Malazan officer's reckoning, and something like three thousand leagues from Unta across the sea.

Massive ancient stone walls ring the city, their foundations sunk into a glacial dump that fills the whole valley and drops into a crevice so deep that even sorcery struggles to sound the bottom of it. Inside, roofs are tiled and streets cobbled, with a maze of shanties and lean-tos crowded against the wall in the poorer quarter. Faded canopies hang over sagging balconies in the bleached tints of long lost glory, and its people go about in leggings and tunics.
