The Imperial Adjunct of the Malazan Empire carries an Otataral sword as the weapon of the office, and it lets the bearer negate sorcery. The blade takes a rusty red cast from the Otataral at its core. What Otataral does is common knowledge in Seven Cities and much less so anywhere else. Such swords are often housed in scabbards of iron and bronze, which hold their effect in check while the blade stays sheathed. Adjunct Lorn carried an Otataral longsword, and either the weapon or her long familiarity with it seems to have given her a feel for the patterns of sorcery and for the patterns of the minds that use it. Carrying the Finnest of the Jaghut Tyrant Raest, she found that the sword deadened its aura, though not completely, which is why Tool warned her against carrying it too long.
