Mock's Hold is the fortress above Malaz City, standing on Mock's Cliff more than eighty arm spans over the town, and it is where Gardens of the Moon opens. A switchback stair cut into the cliff face, called Rampart Way, is the only climb to its gate.
Beyond the gatehouse door lies a courtyard of heaved cobbles, the Old Keep and its tower to the left, the citadel slightly to the right. A garrison barracks runs along the north wall, storehouses and cellars hold supplies, and prisoners go into the catacombs below. Springalds and catapults cover the approaches. Bolted to the outer wall stands a century old pike topped by a weather vane hammered into the shape of a grinning winged demon, called Mock's Vane.
