Malaz City

Malaz City is the island port where the Malazan Empire began, first shown in Gardens of the Moon. It sits on Malaz Island southeast of the continent of Quon Tali, split in two by the meeting of its rivers and facing a harbor known for sharks. Above the town looms Mock's Cliff, and on it Mock's Hold, a onetime pirate stronghold turned imperial garrison, reached by the long stone switchback of the Rampart Way. The empire takes its name from this city, yet the seat of power has moved on; with the capital at Unta, Malaz City has settled into the life of a rough military transit port, its warehouses decaying and many fine houses standing empty. A few blocks from the harbor waits the Deadhouse, an abandoned-looking building the locals refuse to approach.
