Mael

Mael is an Elder God of the seas, one of the oldest powers of the Malazan world, and the priest Mallick Rel serves in his name at the Malazan court in Aren. As an Elder God, Mael belongs to the age before the present pantheon, and his worship survives less in great temples than in old coastal custom: on Quon Tali, folk cast folded leaves, flowers, and garlands onto the water as offerings, while grislier blood rites belong to an older tradition of courting his favor. He carries many names among many peoples, and sharks are held to be his chosen beasts of the sea. Old powers of his kind seldom show themselves, and Mael is known through his priests, his rites, and the deep itself.
