Its dominant power is the kingdom of Lether, a realm obsessed with wealth: gold is the measure of every life, debt is the engine of its society, and expansion by treaty, trade, and conquest is counted a virtue. Ruled from the capital of Letheras by King Ezgara Diskanar, the kingdom presses steadily outward against the tribal peoples on its borders, absorbing lands and debtors alike. Chief among those neighbors are the six tribes of the Tiste Edur, who hold the forests and coasts of the far north. The Domain Ocean bounds the continent to the west, with the Bluerose Sea to the northeast and the inland Dracons Sea in the south.
