Empress of the Malazan Empire: a small, plain-featured Napan woman who wears no insignia and runs it on humourless detail.
Laseen's name means Thronemaster, a meaning the boy Ganoes knows from his tutor.
An old woman waiting by a roadside, who has seen three husbands and two sons off to war, says that prodding and pulling is Laseen's way, as it is the way of the gods. By her account Laseen scatters bones as well as anyone, the bones of husbands and sons, wives and daughters, and to Laseen they are all the same.
