Korbal Broach is the huge, bald partner of the sorcerer Bauchelain, dressed in black leather, with a round face both childlike and monstrous, who moves with uncanny grace and fills onlookers with dread.
Gruntle, a caravan captain, meets him on the rim of a fresh crater where a barrow stood, and when Korbal finally speaks, his voice comes out reedy and high. A chill seems to hang around him even more than around Bauchelain. Buke, a guard who signs on with them, is sure he is the killer behind a run of murders in Darujhistan that stopped only when he left the city.
