Kellanved is the mage who founded the Malazan Empire from Malaz Island with his partner Dancer and ruled as its first Emperor, his reign already history when Gardens of the Moon opens.
Kellanved is the founder and first Emperor of the Malazan Empire. A mage as well as a conqueror, he rose from Malaz Island, the small island off Quon Tali whose city gave the empire its name, with the assassin Dancer as his partner and chief adviser. Under the two of them the empire spread from that single island across Quon Tali and out over the seas, continent by continent, building the armies and institutions that followed. His reign is already history: Empress Laseen, once his Imperial Regent, sits the throne he built, and the age of the Emperor survives mainly in the memories of his old soldiers, who measure the present against it.
