K'azz D'Avore commands the Crimson Guard, a company that has drawn Barghast clans into its ranks and that the Malazans fear could free city after city within a year.
Prince K'azz holds the line at Fox Pass, and Dujek Onearm expects his mercenaries to break through and push into the northlands, so Dujek proposes to strip the farmland bare in retreat and leave the Prince to haul every supply himself. Caladan Brood keeps in contact with K'azz and his mages, and the two agree that the Prince should stay where he is for now. Brood then says he needs some of the Prince's men, the Crimson Guard's Sixth Blade.
