Kartool is an island city of Quon Tali, conquered by the Malazan Empire decades ago and ruled since by an Imperial Fist, with an imperial garrison in residence and the city guard commander quartered in the Imperial Domicile. Before the conquest its power sat with the cult of D'rek, whose master sorcerers held the Grand Temple under their Demidrek. The Malazans abolished slavery on the island, closed its Execution Pits and put an end to the Istral'fennidahn celebrations. During the Clear Season in autumn the prevailing winds make travel south to Malaz Island all but impossible for two months, and imperial recruiting drives rarely take more than a handful of Kartoolians, most of them destitute or criminal.
