The Imass are ice-age hunter-gatherers of the deep past, guided by Bonecaster shamans, the living people from whom the undead T'lan Imass of Gardens of the Moon were made in the Ritual of Tellann.
The Imass are an ancient people of the Malazan world's deep past, ice-age hunters who lived more than three hundred thousand years before the present. The undead T'lan Imass serve the Malazan Empire; those deathless warriors are what living Imass made of themselves through the Ritual of Tellann, sworn to their unending war against the Jaghut. A step back shows the living people in their own age: clans of hunter-gatherers working flaked stone, guided by shamans called Bonecasters, singing songs that carry the heartbeat of fleeing prey. They shared their cold world with great beasts such as the tenag and the ay, and with the Eres, older ape-like tool-makers from whom they are thought to have arisen.
