The Hounds of Shadow are the beasts that serve High House Shadow. Some hold them older than the Shadow Realm itself. Each stands the size of a mule, broad and bunched at the shoulder, coated dun brown or shaggy tan, dark tongued, with eyes that differ from one Hound to the next: glowing yellow in one, red in another, a lurid green in a third.
They hunt without leaving a print, a tuft of hair or any other trace of their passing, and they carry an acrid, pungent scent. Their hearing picks up a rabbit's heartbeat half a league off. The howling is the part people remember, a sound that empties the nerve of anyone within reach of it.
