Greymane is a Malazan commander whom the rebel Leoman names among the Empress's great military leaders, beside Dujek Onearm, Admiral Nok and Coltaine.
In a drawn-out war over vast ground with no fixed front, he needed self-contained units ready for anything, and some of his legions took that shape. When a captain in Seven Cities quietly reshapes his squads on that model, a veteran sergeant recognises it at once, and the change is judged worth keeping. Among the marines there, one soldier repeats a rumour that Greymane could be called back from the Korelri campaign, and Strings wants to know where he heard it.
