In the Malazan world gods walk the same ground as mortals, keeping temples, gathering worship, and meddling in mortal affairs, their crowded pantheon mirrored by the Houses of the Deck of Dragons.

Gods in the Malazan world are not distant abstractions. They walk the same ground as their worshippers, keep temples and priesthoods across the continents, and are rarely far from meddling in mortal affairs. The pantheon is crowded and in motion: beings called Ascendants, powers risen above the mortal condition by one path or another, of whom the gods proper are those bound to worship and its obligations. As the alchemist Baruk observes, there are many paths to Ascendancy, some more subtle than others. The pantheon's standing order is mirrored in the Deck of Dragons, the divinatory deck whose Houses, thrones, and roles chart the powers as they stand, with new cards appearing as new powers rise. Mortals swear by the gods, bargain with them, and serve them, and the wars draw the pantheon in.
