Eternal Domicile
The half-built palace complex at the heart of Letheras, raised to replace the Old Palace and sinking steadily into the clay beneath it, its central dome having already killed five royal architects.
The Eternal Domicile is the newer palace complex at the heart of Letheras, begun seventeen years before the events of Midnight Tides by King Ezgara Diskanar and meant to take the place of the Old Palace. The Avenue of the Seventh Closure runs to a concourse before it, overlooked by the king's balcony on the First Wing. Five wings of four tiers each were planned; three stand finished, and the other two keep sinking into the clay beneath, as does, slowly, the whole ironically named structure. The central dome has defeated everyone set to it: four royal architects have killed themselves over the problem and a fifth died trapped inside a sewage pipe. The tunnels below, dug so guards could cross the palace quickly, sit chest-deep in muddy water and swarm with rats. The throne room is approached along the Royal Colonnade, a marble hall wide enough for ten men abreast, flanked by twenty spiral-carved pillars painted sea-green.
