Deragoth

The Deragoth are enormous canine beasts of the ancient world, named in House of Chains. The word shortens a Tiste Andii phrase, Dera'tin'jeragoth, meaning Hounds of Darkness, and the scholar credited with coining it insists the beasts have no connection to the Darkness of the pantheon and that the words simply suited them.

Accounts describe them as midnight black and the size of antlered cattle, something halfway between a wolf and a bear, with massive canines and a bellowing roar, moving with a casual arrogance. The oldest of those accounts make the Deragoth the first enslavers of humankind, hunting alongside the Eres as the dominant half of the partnership, and hold that their number gave the Seven Cities subcontinent its own.
