The Deck of Dragons is the divinatory card deck of the Malazan world. Its cards portray the pantheon as it stands: the High Houses with their thrones, knights, and lesser roles, along with unaligned powers belonging to no House, and new cards appear as the pantheon itself shifts, as with the House of Shadow, newly manifest. No two decks are quite alike. In skilled hands a reading uncovers patterns hidden from mortal eyes, cards animating, changing with local conditions, and sometimes pointing not at a distant god but at a nearby person filling that role. The practice is respected and feared in equal measure, for the Houses open onto the warrens, and a window can be looked through from both sides.
