Deadsmell is a corporal and mage in Sergeant Balm's 9th squad of medium infantry, part of the 8th Legion of the Malaz 14th Army, and he serves the squad as its healer with access to High Denul. He is broad in the chest and bearded, with brows gone mostly bare. Master Sergeant Braven Tooth handed him his name, as he did for so many Malazan soldiers, probably for the musty smell of him or for his knack of sniffing out the dead. A few of his fellow soldiers take him for a necromancer.
