Dassem Ultor is the man known as the First Sword of Empire, from the days when he ran the Empire's military.
Word about him reaches the Malazan capital as a rumour, and young Ganoes Paran asks a soldier on the wall outright whether Dassem is dead, getting only a muttered answer about war. A Claw tells Paran that Whiskeyjack's company broke a Seven Cities mage cabal back when Dassem ran the military, and that old hands of the Second Army fought beside him as far back as Falar. The Claw dates the army's troubles to the loss of Dassem's daughter and the end of his command.
