Darujhistan, the last free city of Genabackis, is a gas-lit city of blue fire on Lake Azur, without a standing army yet never conquered, and in Gardens of the Moon the Malazan Empire wants it.
Darujhistan is the last free city of Genabackis. Set on the shore of Lake Azur, it is lit by natural gas piped up from caverns beneath the streets, so that travelers know it as the city of blue fire. Its people are of Daru and Gadrobi stock, and during its great festivals the population swells toward three hundred thousand. The city keeps no standing army, yet it has never been conquered, a survival its citizens credit variously to the gods' protective eye, to its private militias, to its Council, and to its mages. Legend says the city was founded on a rumor of a Jaghut barrow in the nearby Gadrobi Hills, and rumor remains its favorite currency. The Malazan Empire has turned its attention toward the city.
