Cord is sergeant of the 5th squad, 2nd Company of the Ashok Regiment, serving under Captain Kindly. He is a Seven Cities native, dark-skinned, his face scarred beneath a bald pate stitched over with tattoos, and there is enough gold in his teeth that his smile comes out as a row of gleaming gold. His squad is posted to the frontier town of Silver Lake on Genabackis, where more than one of them, himself included, has spent time under house arrest for drunkenness.
