A mute young man with the mind of a child, Chaur lives in a hamlet on the Tapur Road in Seven Cities, where the blacksmith Barathol Mekhar stands as his guardian.
Chaur is a huge man with a pocked, ugly face, quick to smile and easily brought to tears, who stays calm around blood and happily helps with butchering or shovelling. Handed a newborn, he rocks and coos over her with great tenderness. Barathol calls him simple and stubborn, and when the blacksmith sets out on a long road Chaur comes trudging after him barefoot, his kit bundled against his chest.
