Cawn
A city on the Idryn river in Quon Tali, trading with Li Heng and known for bureaucrats who can tax a visitor out of every coin.
Cawn is a city on the Idryn river in Quon Tali, named in Deadhouse Gates. Trade runs up and down the river between Cawn and Li Heng, and the city's reputation travels further than its goods: its bureaucrats can tax, fee and tithe a visitor out of every coin he carries, and the tolls levied on portage down the Idryn are held to be outrageous.
One Malazan captain calls its waterfront the ugliest in Quon Tali. Raw sewage dribbles into the water not far from where the poorest citizens wash their clothes and themselves, the main wharf leans, and the boardwalk has decayed to the point that unloading cargo is more dangerous than the voyage. Each year the city holds a Festival of Lights, launching fleets of candles and small lamps.
