Bridgeburners

The Bridgeburners are a storied elite unit of the Malazan military. They were forged a generation earlier in the empire's Seven Cities campaigns, in the crucible of the Holy Desert Raraku, and their insignia is a stone arched bridge lit by ruby flames. Respected across the empire and even by its enemies, they have nonetheless been spent hard since the throne changed hands, handed the dirtiest campaigns of the Genabackan war until only an under-strength division remains. They have passed three years mining beneath the besieged city of Pale, and their onetime commander Whiskeyjack, demoted to sergeant, leads the 9th squad, whose soldiers include the mage Quick Ben, the assassin Kalam, and the sappers Fiddler and Hedge.
