Black the Elder is an Avowed of the Crimson Guard's Third Company in Return of the Crimson Guard, a heavily armored veteran counted among the mercenary company's more skilled fighters.
Black, called Black the Elder or Black the Greater, is a soldier of the Crimson Guard, the mercenary company sworn against the Malazan Empire. He is an Avowed, one of the veterans bound by the company's founding vow, and serves in its Third Company, where the mage Corlo counts him among the Guard's more skilled fighters. He fights in a thick scaled hauberk and mailed leggings with a visored helm, and when not in combat he carries a broad shield slung across his back. His brother, Black the Lesser, is a Crimson Guardsman as well, and the two similar-looking soldiers are known through the company as a pair.
