Bhederin
Large plains herd animals of the Malazan world, cousins to the extinct bhed, herded by the Rhivi and hunted across the Jhag Odhan by tribes who run them over cliffs by the hundred.
Bhederin are large herd animals, cousins to the even larger bhed, which was driven to extinction. Their herds are heavy enough that the mass passage of their hooves tamps down the thin soil of the country they cross. Wild bhederin range the Jhag Odhan on Seven Cities, where the Anibar and other tribes hunt them by running hundreds over a cliff and then setting four or five dozen butchers to smoking the meat on racks. A larger and more solitary breed lives on the Letherii continent, wintering in the pocket forests of the Awl'dan and standing more than twice the size of a Letherii ox, its bulls ferocious and belligerent. The bhederin of the Toblai Tundra are twice the size of their southern kin and carry long horns that spread out to the sides. On Genabackis the Rhivi drive domesticated herds with them wherever they travel.
