Beak is a Quon Talian mage serving in a marine squad of the Bonehunters. He is about thirty-six years old, guileless to the point of seeming childlike, and he tells everyone he meets that he is stupid, because he believes it.
His training came from the servants of his family's country estate, starting with a Seti witch who ran the stables, and it left him with a reach across the warrens that few schooled mages ever manage. He calls the warrens candles and knows each of them by colour. None of that has touched his opinion of himself. Other soldiers keep away from his nervous, delighted talk about sorcery, and Beak understands only that he is not liked.
