Banith is a city on the island of Fist, unimportant in itself but home to the Cloister of the Blessed Lady, the third most revered holy site in the country. Pilgrims arrive year round, and the city lives by servicing and fleecing them. The narrow Way of Obtestation runs from the docks to the cloister's copper doors, lined with shops, stalls, touts and hawkers selling charms, healing stones and holy relics, with food sellers, stables and inns crowded into the streets behind. A renegade Malazan army occupies the city and collects its taxes, day to day governance falls to a Lord Mayor, and the highest local legal authority is the Chief Assessor, who answers only to Paliss. Corruption runs deep in the City Watch, whose shakedowns of local businesses are routine.
