Aren is the walled southern port and seat of Malazan command on Seven Cities, its otataral-laced walls and imperial garrison anchoring the occupation as the Whirlwind rebellion rises.
Aren is the great southern port of the subcontinent of Seven Cities and the seat of Malazan imperial command there, prominent in Deadhouse Gates. The city stands where the Menykh River meets Aren Bay, behind high walls impregnated with otataral, the strange ore that deadens sorcery. Under the occupation it houses the subcontinent's High Fist, and as Deadhouse Gates opens that office belongs to Pormqual, whose court includes the priest Mallick Rel and whose harbor holds the imperial fleet of Admiral Nok. Before the empire came, Aren was a seat of the Falah'dan, the old princes of Seven Cities; its ruler Enezgura once carried conquests far to the west. With the Whirlwind rebellion boiling across the subcontinent, Aren's walls and garrison anchor Malazan power in the south.
