High Marshal Amby Bole is barely out of his teens, a retired member of the Mott Irregulars, and one half of a pair so alike in expression, voice and stride that strangers cannot keep them straight. His brother Jula is the other half, and both are in love with the swamp witch Precious Thimble, who fought beside them in the Genabackis Campaign and has no intention of ever choosing between them. Amby makes a point of keeping his distance from important people, Precious excepted, on the grounds that important people draw fire and standing near them has never been healthy; back when he was a runt fighting Malazans he watched heads explode and hearts burst among men who had not worked that out. He cannot read. His toes are long and knobby. In Darujhistan he signs on as a shareholder with the Trygalle Trade Guild for no better reason than that Precious did.
