Wizard's staff
The staff each of the Istari bears, at once a tool, a weapon and a badge of rank.
Every one of the Istari carries a staff, and since the order numbers five there are only ever five of them abroad in Middle-earth at a time. It serves as tool, weapon and mark of office together. Gandalf's is wood, and its crown gives light in places where no other light reaches, as in the tunnels under the Misty Mountains. Near its foot he has driven a nail, which he uses to scratch the cirth letter G on a door or a stone to show that he has been there. Radagast bears one as well, though nothing is set down of its look or its powers, and so do the two wizards who went away into the east.
