A long, blackened valley between the forked eastern arms of the Grey Mountains, known across the north as the breeding-ground of dragons.
The Withered Heath is a long valley in the eastern reaches of the Grey Mountains, where the range forks into two thin arms. Its ground is burned and blackened by what lives on it, for the heath is the breeding-place of dragons, and it was known and feared across the north of Middle-earth. Dragons once infested the Grey Mountains and the lands beyond them. By TA 2941 the valley seems to have stood largely empty of the greater kinds: Thorin spoke of it then as the place where the great dragons bred, putting it in the past, though lesser members of the race survived and may have returned there to breed from time to time.
