West-march
Rohan's western country, south of the Isen and north of the Adorn, held as fortified ground against the Dunlendings.
The West-march was the part of Rohan west of Edoras, lying south of the River Isen and north of the Adorn. Beyond the Isen was the Gap of Rohan and the road through it to Isengard. The Kings of Rohan held the march as fortified country against the Dunlendings across the border. In TA 2754 its lord was Freca, and when Freca quarrelled with Helm Hammerhand the king killed him with a single blow. The march then rose in revolt under Freca's son Wulf, who made common cause with the Dunlendings and invaded Rohan during the Long Winter. Rohan did not hold the country fully again for more than a century afterwards, until the days of King Folcwine.
