Valar
The Valar are the Powers of the world in Tolkien's legendarium, spirits who entered Arda at its beginning to shape and govern it under Eru Ilúvatar.
Before ever sun rose or Elves awoke, The Silmarillion tells of the Powers who enter the world to prepare it. The Valar are the greatest of the Ainur, spirits born of the thought of Eru Ilúvatar, who take shape within Arda and labor to order its lands, seas, and skies. Each governs a province of nature: Manwë the airs and winds, Ulmo the waters, Aulë the substances of earth, Yavanna all growing things, with others for dreams, grief, strength, and the hunt. They dwell in Valinor in the far West, beyond the Great Sea. To Elves and Men of Middle-earth they are known mostly through lore and song, named the Lords of the West; in The Lord of the Rings they are a distant presence behind the world rather than actors within it. Their deeds in the shaping of Arda fill the opening chapters of The Silmarillion.
