The Valar are powers of the ancient world whom folk in Gondor call on in danger and in blessing, speaking of their thrones and of a battle they fought in the youth of the world.
The Valar live on in the speech of the South. A ranger of Ithilien cries out for them to turn aside a charging mumak, and a solemn blessing in Gondor asks for good days for as long as their thrones endure. One of them, Orome the Great, is remembered riding in their battle in the world's youth, an image that comes to mind when a king charges into war.
