Utumno

Utumno, also called Udûn, is the first stronghold of Melkor in Middle-earth, raised long before the First Age. He delves it himself, deep beneath the northern heights of the Iron Mountains, in a place the light of the Lamps cannot reach and more than a thousand miles from where Angband is afterwards cut. The Silmarillion describes it as carved far down into the substance of the earth, a domain of obsidian and fire and ice. To Utumno Melkor draws the evil powers of the world, and cruel spirits, phantoms and wraiths haunt its halls and the forests around it. The Trolls are bred there; Treebeard says of them that they were made in mockery of the Ents.
