The Undying Lands lay west over the Sea from Númenor, and the Ban of the Valar forbade the Númenoreans to set foot there, since Men must keep the mortality that is theirs.
Sauron lies to the King of Númenor that whoever possesses the Undying Lands gains everlasting life, and that the Ban is there only so that Men's kings never rise above the Valar. When Ar-Pharazôn lands on Aman the Blessed, the Valar lay down their guardianship and call upon the One. Númenor is cast down into the Sea, and the Undying Lands are taken out of the circles of the world for ever.
