Under-Hill was a district of Hobbiton lying before Hobbiton Hill, and the Underhill family may have taken its name from it.
Under-Hill was a district of Hobbiton that lay before Hobbiton Hill. The Underhill family may well have taken its name from the place, having branches through both the Shire and Bree. In the late Third Age, Bungo Baggins built a considerable hobbit-hole up on Hobbiton Hill in Under-Hill and called it Bag End, which became the best known hole in the district. Bilbo Baggins after him gave his address as Bag-End, Under-Hill, or sometimes simply as Bag End.
