Umbar
Umbar is a great cape and enclosed haven on the coasts south of Gondor in The Lord of the Rings, an ancient harbor of the sea-kings that in the Third Age is the stronghold of the Corsairs, enemies of Gondor.
Talk of war in The Return of the King turns again and again to a harbor far down the coast. Umbar is a great cape and land-locked firth south of Gondor's borders, one of the finest natural havens in Middle-earth, fortified since the days when the sea-kings of Westernesse first raised quays and walls there. Whoever holds it commands the coasts and sea-roads of the South. In the Third Age it is held by the Corsairs of Umbar, raiders whose black-sailed fleets trouble Gondor's shores and river mouths, and its name in Minas Tirith means an old enemy at the kingdom's back. The appendices of The Lord of the Rings trace the long contest for the haven between Gondor and the men of the South, a history of seizures and sieges reaching across thousands of years.
