Úmaiar
The Umaiar, Maiar whom Melkor corrupted and whom other peoples named demons.
Umaiar are Maiar that Melkor turned, spirits of the same order as the Powers who went over to him before the world was old. The greatest of them, three at least and no more than seven, were the Balrogs. Others scattered through Ea after Arda was made, and Melkor gathered them again when he came to contest the world with Manwe. When he learned that the Elves had awoken he sent shadows and evil spirits to watch about Cuivienen and waylay any who strayed, and out of that came the Elvish tales of the dark Hunter and of the shape that passed suddenly across the stars. Varda made the Nur-menel, it is said, to keep such spies out.
