Two Lamps
Illuin and Ormal, the Two Lamps, were the first lights of Arda, forged by Aule, filled with light by Varda, and set on high pillars in the north and south of the world while the Valar dwelt at Almaren.
Illuin and Ormal, the Two Lamps, were the first great lights of Arda. When the Valar had entered the world and brought order to the seas and the lands and the mountains, there was need of light, and Aule at the prayer of Yavanna forged two mighty lamps. Varda filled them with light and Manwe hallowed them, and the Valar set them upon high pillars, Illuin in the furthest north and Ormal in the deepest south. In the middle of Arda, where the light of the lamps mingled, lay the Isle of Almaren amid the Great Lake, where the Valar first dwelt.
