Tom Bombadil

Tom Bombadil is one of the older things in Middle-earth, and The Fellowship of the Ring offers no clear explanation of him. He lives in the Old Forest east of Buckland, in the valley of the Withywindle near the edge of the Barrow-downs, in a small house he keeps with his wife Goldberry, far from any other dwelling. To hobbit eyes he looks like a stout old man, taller and broader than they are but too short for a Man, with a face as red as a ripe apple, bright blue eyes and a brown beard hanging below his knees. He goes about in a blue jacket, a green belt, leather breeches and yellow boots, with a battered hat and a feather in it. He is loud, quick and merry, sings almost everything he says in rhyme, and often speaks of himself by name. His land is small, but within it his power seems to have no limit.
