Tom Bombadil is a loud, merry singer in a blue jacket and yellow boots who comes hopping home through the Old Forest, frees Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow, and shelters the hobbits for the night.
Goldberry, the lady of his house, tells Frodo that Tom is master of the wood, the water and the hills, though the land and all that grows on it belong only to themselves. Asked who he is, Tom calls himself Eldest, says he is older than the river and the trees, and claims to remember the first raindrop. He talks largely in rhyme and often names himself as he goes.
