Tol Eressëa
Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, is an island off the eastern shore of Aman in The Silmarillion, within sight of the Blessed Realm, an Elvish dwelling place beside the waters of the West.
Off the eastern coast of Aman, within sight of the shores of the Blessed Realm, The Silmarillion places an island with a solitary name. Tol Eressëa, the Lonely Isle, earns it in the deep past: the histories tell how the island once stood alone in the middle of the Great Sea, and how Ulmo, lord of waters, uprooted it to serve as the ferry of the Elves, drawn back and forth across the ocean bearing the kindreds of the Great Journey westward, until at last it comes to rest in the Bay of Eldamar. Elves of the Teleri dwell long upon it, loving the sea beside which they live. In the lore of the legendarium it remains an Elvish homeland at the edge of Valinor, its white shores the first sight of the Undying Lands for any who sail the westward road.
