Thrór's Map
Thrór's Map shows the Lonely Mountain, the river beneath it, the country round about and a secret entrance in the mountain's western side, and it carries moon-letters that only the right moonlight shows.
Thrór and his son Thráin drew the map at a time nobody recorded, and Elrond judged it had been written on a midsummer night under a crescent moon, since it carries moon-letters that only the right moonlight will show. What it shows plainly is the Lonely Mountain, the river running out from under it, the country round about, and a secret entrance in the mountain's western side. The map came through the destruction of the dwarf-kingdom in the year 2770 of the Third Age and was kept afterwards as an heirloom of Thrór's people, passing to his son Thráin along with the key to that side-door when the old king went off to the Mines of Moria in 2790.
