Thorin Oakenshield is a dwarf of royal line, grandson of Thrór, King under the Mountain, heir of the kingdom of Erebor that prospered beside the town of Dale in the days before the dragon. When Smaug descended on the Lonely Mountain and seized its halls and hoard, Thorin's people escaped into long exile and lean wandering. Proud, stern, and given to speeches, Thorin carries the memory of that loss like a banner. It is his plan, with Gandalf's encouragement, that gathers thirteen dwarves at Bag End and hires a very reluctant hobbit as burglar: the company means to journey east to the Mountain and win back the treasure of his fathers from the dragon that took it.
