Théoden
Théoden is the King of Rohan in The Two Towers, lord of the House of Eorl, ruling the land of the horse-lords from the Golden Hall of Meduseld at Edoras in a time of gathering war.
In the Golden Hall of Meduseld dwells the lord of the horse-lords. Théoden son of Thengel is King of Rohan, seventeenth of the line of Eorl, ruler of the green country of the Riddermark whose people are the great horsemen of Middle-earth. He is an old man, bent and dim-eyed, listening in gloom to the counsel of Gríma at his footstool while war burns along his borders. Age and dark tidings sit heavily on him: his kingdom is beset, and his strength is not what it was. Yet the blood of kings runs in him, and the memory of a proud house. Meduseld's carved pillars and the songs of Eorl the Young speak of what Rohan has been, and of what its king may yet be asked to bear.
