Straits of the World

The Straits of the World were a high region that once lay between the inland Sea of Helcar, the Inner Seas, and the Bay of Belfalas at the south-eastern end of the Great Gulf. According to the Ambarkanta, the War of the Powers opened the Great Gulf and joined the Sea of Ringil, the Eastern Sea, and the Western Sea into the Inner Seas, which cut the Dark Land off from the Hither Lands. The high ground left between the two was given the name Straits of the World. In The Atlas of Middle-earth, Karen Wynn Fonstad drew the region as crossed by the rivers Poros and Harnen.
