Sting

Sting is a short blade of Elven make, forged in the hidden city of Gondolin in the First Age. By the reckoning of Elves it is only a dagger, but for a hobbit it serves as a sword. Bilbo Baggins comes by it in The Hobbit, in a troll-hoard in eastern Eriador where it lies with the greater blades Glamdring and Orcrist. Like them, being the work of the Elven smiths of the Elder Days, it shines with a cold light whenever Orcs are near, its edges glittering blue. Its keenness will part the webs of the great spiders. Bilbo gives the blade its name in the forest of Mirkwood, after it has served him against one of them.
