Ship-king
Ship-king was the style of four successive Kings of Gondor, from Tarannon Falastur to Hyarmendacil I, whose reigns from the year 830 of the Third Age turned the realm's navy into the power that took Umbar.
Four Kings of Gondor in succession were called Ship-kings: Tarannon Falastur, Eärnil I, Ciryandil and Hyarmendacil I. The label marks what they cared about, which was the fleet. From the year 830 of the Third Age to 1149 they built the navy into the strongest power on that coast and pushed the kingdom's borders south and west to take in South Gondor and Umbar. Tarannon's fleets reached far past the Mouths of Anduin. Eärnil I rebuilt the ancient haven of Pelargir and made there the armament that took Umbar from the Southrons and their Black Númenórean masters in 933. Under Hyarmendacil I the realm ran from the Field of Celebrant to the river Harnen, and Mordor lay watched and empty.
